Coaching
Adding to her swimming experience, Marcia is a knowledgeable and accredited coach, certified as a Level 4 USMS Coach and a Level 3.2 Coach for both ASCA and USA Swimming, with specialization in Open Water. She provides leadership throughout the swimming community at many levels: Pool Training and Competition, Introduction to the Open Water, Long Distance Swimming and Marathon Swimming. She has written extensively on a variety of swimming topics, including her popular book, Dover Solo: Swimming the English Channel, which details the story behind this swim: her preparation, motivation and training. It has become “The Bible” of Channel Swimming, a must-read for aspiring marathon swimmers.
Over several decades, her customized training programs have allowed countless athletes to find success with their goals over a broad spectrum. She advocates that the key to a successful training programs is finding the right speeds, distances, and practice varieties for each specific swimmer. This involves mapping out the big picture plan then incorporating the specific goal, ability, and lifestyle of the individual as well. This plan is then backed up with specific workouts aimed to achieve this goal.
As an instructor, Marcia teaches adults and children how to swim better and faster, encourages triathletes how to drop time, and supports open water aspirants how to prepare for big events. She has been instrumental with the success of many IronMan finishers since 2010, and now heads up the coaching at North Shore Masters Swim Club.
Accompanying her coaching talent is her uncanny ability to tell it like it is - possibly not in the way you will like it or want it to be - but often delivered in a humorous, quirky hands-on manner that eventually inspires confidence, self-reliance, and completion of major achievements.
What motivates Marcia to coach a spectrum of swimmers ranging from successful English Channel Swimmers to anxious novices? “I love to help athletes achieve their goals, whatever size these goals may be and however long it may take to get there. It makes my day when an athlete says, “I DID IT!” and are so pleased with themselves. To get to this point, I design distinctive programs that allows an individual to fulfill his or her own potential while maintaining life balance. Getting athletes comfortable then self-assured in Open Water is also a major motivator to my coaching. It’s so fun to see someone make that leap in confidence.”
